Damian Green’s sacking today by Theresa May – or her asking him to resign, to be exact – puts Brexit Secretary David Davis in a serious quandary.

Davis threatened to resign if Green was sacked:

Now Green is gone – but if Davis does not resign, he will be sending the clearest possible message to the EU: “ignore everything I say – I’m full of bluff and bluster but I won’t back it up”.

Author Alex Nunns called it correctly on Twitter:

As with the reality that May sacked Green out of weakness, not strength, you’re unlikely to find this perspective in the ‘MSM’.

And of course, if David does step down, May is weaker still – perhaps the BBC will say it’s a sign of Britain’s strength in the Brexit negotiations that we don’t really need a Brexit Secretary..
