Every Labour member to have chance to de-/re-select MP in 2018 — The SKWAWKBOX

Few Labour members may be aware of it, but Labour’s latest rule-book contains a provision to give each of them an opportunity to change their MP in 2018. Usually, this opportunity takes place when an election is called, but possible changes to the number of MPs has meant that the party has set out a…

A&E waiting times increase again – as demand FALLS — The SKWAWKBOX

Jeremy Hunt – praying for a new excuse? As the NHS enters yet another anticipated ‘winter crisis’, public attention will turn to Accident and emergency (A&E) waiting times as a key indicator of the condition of the NHS and its ability under the Tories to provide the care the UK public needs. Last winter was…

If govt respected our troops, would it serve them this for Xmas lunch? — The SKWAWKBOX

The Tories love to make a show of respecting our armed forces, with ceremony and the occasional words of praise in the Commons. But the less than glowing reality of the Establishment’s attitude has been seen in the underfunding and cuts, as well as substandard body armour and vehicles, that the UK’s servicemen and women have…

Video: Chris Williamson’s Xmas special – looking back and ahead to govt — The SKWAWKBOX

Labour front-bencher Chris Williamson’s ‘Week in Westminster’ series has been innovative, humorous and well received. His ‘Christmas special’, in which he looks back on Labour achievements, Tory disasters and ahead to what Labour members and supporters need to do in 2018 and beyond, is a work of satirical genius well worth watching and sharing. Enjoy…

Right/’centrist’ humour-fail as they miss satire in Williamson’s Xmas message

On Christmas Eve, Labour front-bencher Chris Williamson released his ‘Christmas message’. It was a tongue-in-cheek affair. Williamson releases weekly video updates on goings-on at Westminster, but his Christmas edition was ‘green-screened’ to look as if it was filmed in Buckingham Palace. The video showed the MP signing Christmas cards to Dudley North MP Ian Austin…

Corbyn wins ‘Beard of the Year’

Corbyn wins ‘Beard of the Year’

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn, after a hard-fought contest with Prince Harry, has won the beard of the year contest by a relatively comfortable margin of 57% to 40%, in spite of frantic attempts by right-wingers on social media to turn the tide.

The victory was announced by one of Corbyn’s unofficial campaign managers, with a very unofficial comment:

Comment:

Few could seriously argue – though no doubt they will anyway – that Corbyn doesn’t deserve this award and more after turning British politics on its head right way up in the two years of his tenure and especially over the eight months since Theresa May’s decision to call a snap election.

Congratulations and a hairy merry Christmas to the Labour leader and all his supporters.

The Establishment assault against the independent ‘new left media’ (NLM) has escalated relentlessly over recent months, with smears by government figures and the mainstream media (MSM).

One of the least savoury recent elements of these smears has been the abuse by the MSM of decisions by the only genuinely-independent regulator, IMPRESS, to attack NLM outlets.

The MSM has voraciously seized upon an IMPRESS decision – which amounted to saying that the Canary should have said Laura Kuenssberg, the political editor of the ‘impartial’ BBC, had been invited to the Tory conference fringe instead of to the Tory conference – to launch an assault on the Canary’s credibility.

Similar tactics have been used against the SKWAWKBOX.

The inherent dishonesty of the MSM ploy is that their publications publish corrections and retractions almost every day – in spite of being ‘regulated’ by IPSO, which is run by the very same MSM.

Foxes in the chicken coop judging themselves harmless – and yet even then they have to publish those corrections and retractions. So to leap on the occasional, minor correction published by the NLM as proof of ‘fake news’ is deeply hypocritical at the very least.

But today the MSM’s attempts to smear the NLM entered surreal territory, with the publication of a bizarre article in the Mail on Sunday by a commentator who, only earlier this year, came out as a Tory. It is titled, without apparent irony:

sot

Well-known campaigner The Artist Taxi Driver (@chunkymark) made a two-minute video in response to this ridiculous article in which he could barely contain his disbelief and derision at the idea that the MSM and Theresa May are trying to pretend to be a beacon of truth when they are the biggest source of fake news in this country. It is shown below with its creator’s kind permission:

Make no mistake, the Establishment is coming after the independent left media that millions rely on to genuinely hold power to account and expose the Establishment’s behaviour and propaganda.

And it has neither shame nor sense of irony about how it does so.

In the bleak midwinter: the harsh realities of a #Grenfell Xmas

In the bleak midwinter: the harsh realities of a #Grenfell Xmas

grenfell-after

Hopefully, you’re warm, snug and safe as you’re reading this and are looking forward to Christmas Day with family or friends – though all too many people are not.

Huge numbers of people will be homeless this Christmas, including almost 130,000 children. Thousands, including veterans, will be sleeping on the streets or in hostels tonight. Hundreds of thousands of disabled or vulnerable people will be in severe hardship because of cuts to the social security safety net and the Tories’ disastrous Universal Credit debacle.

And for many of the survivors of the Grenfell blaze, it will be a very bleak Christmas indeed.

Tonight, 101 Grenfell families will go to sleep without a home.

Thirty-four Grenfell children will wake up on Christmas Day homeless.

Since June, twenty-four Grenfell survivors have attempted suicide.

Theresa May originally promised us all of them would be housed within three weeks – and claimed that “the Government is there for them at this terrible time”

Adding insult to injury, May also this week denied the survivors a voice on the panel of the inquiry into the disaster – after telling the inquiry Chair less than ten days earlier that she was ‘particularly pleased’ by his proposal to establish an advisory panel of those directly affected by the fire:

Comment:

What a message of Christmas ‘cheer’ from May to the survivors and their community.

Have a very good Christmas – but spare a thought for the Grenfell survivors – and the homeless, the poor and the vulnerable suffering under the Tories every day of the year.
